Serra de Monchique 'The Garden of the Algarve' Utopia, Well Almost!
The Algarve with its famous pristine beaches and micro climate offers the best year round holiday opportunities for the discerning holidaymaker. Quaint fishing ports and historic cities and villages compete for the tourists attention. Secure family beaches and the west coasts wild surfing beaches offer a broad variety of scenery and seaside activities. Over 300 sunny days every year make the Algarve, Europe's favourite holiday destination. The Serra De Monchique is the Algarve's best kept secret, founded by the Romans which provides a historic backdrop and its natural spring waters are said to rejuvenate and even lengthen our days. Talking about Romans, it was the Romans that built the stone terraces in Villa Vida Nova's gardens. They were built to retain the excellent soil for growing vegetables and fruit to feed the Centurians and troops, these days the terraces are still there but it's not the Romans getting fat on all that fruit.

A wonderful opportunity to experience the character, personality, and flavour of this picturesque holiday region! The delightful town of Monchique which is only 2 minutes drive from the villa, has a pretty central square with street cafes in which to while away the time and people watch. There are beautiful gardens to admire and narrow historic streets to explore. By the way, parking is free everywhere in Monchique including the underground car park! There are several supermarkets for you to stock up on supplies, 3 butchers, numerous cafés and a tea room serving delicious home made food, two banks with cash points, three petrol stations, 2 chemists, wine shop, gift shops and newsagents selling foreign papers. Recently opened is the new Intermarche supermarket mall, with a selection of shops, plenty of parking and ideal to stock up your holiday provisions.

Excellent Dining for all Tastes and Budgets, a "Foodies Heaven"There are many excellent yet inexpensive local restaurants some of the best are within walking distance of the villa. You will be tempted by the delicious regional fare, chicken piri-piri, black Iberian pork, wild boar with plums, lamb casserole, chicken with cherries, pork and prawn cataplana, stuffed squid, fresh grilled fish, local cured ham and smoked sausage, healthy salads, honey and marzipan sweets just to name a few, all are locally produced. Yes, burgers, pizza and steaks are also available! There is an amazing selection of wines and ports to enhance your dining experience, don't forget to try the local firewater Medronho, and for the ladies, Melosa, served from a glass slipper! (You have to search for the slipper!)

New to Portugal? Monchique is a perfect introduction. Enjoy "Authentic Portugal" at its best, with some intriguing surprises around every corner.Monchique is nestled in a valley between the only two mountains in the Algarve, Foia and Picota. Established by the Romans, who built, with granite, terraces on the rich fertile land to grow produce, the Villa sits on these same terraces today. Corga das Ervilhas - Terraces of Peas! Our terraces still produce oranges, tangerines, lemons, plums, peaches, figs, persimmon fruit, grapes, olives, of which our guests are welcome to eat.
There are level walks, steep walks, walks to the top of Foia and walks to the cafes in town. Bird watching is very popular as we are on a major migratory route. Cork oak forests abound and offer welcome shade from the hot summer sun, and after all that exercise kick off your shoes and cool off in the infinity pool. Wind down with a glass of local wine or ice cold beer or test your culinary skills on the BBQ.

Serra de Monchique - guaranteed to capture your heart. From the villa there are many attractions within a short drive. By the way 83% of the total land area of the Serra Da Monchique is a Declared Natural Reserve. The peaks and contour roads of Foia and Picota afford 360 degree panoramic views, don't forget your camera! For the more adventurous, take some of the side roads and visit deserted watermills or the ghost village of Barbelote with its stunning cascade. The mountains here are quite spectacular and not to be missed ideal for the biker, hiker or just a casual stroll. You can rent bikes, they will even deliver and collect them from the villa.

Local Health Spa and Villa Vida Nova GuestsThe famous village of Caldas de Monchique with its health spa is only 10 minutes drive away. Here you can take in the famous Monchique spring waters and enjoy being pampered in the health salon at Hotel Termas de Monchique. On summer evenings you can listen to local live music whilst dining in the Caldas de Monchique square at Restaurant 1692.

A Short Drive Away, Golf, Motor Sport, Boat TripsThere are several golf courses, the nearest Morgado do Regengo just 15 minutes drive away, her you can rent clubs if you did not bring your own and the new Autodromo do Algarve, Formula 1 designed race track, features various motor sport events and track days and if you are up to it, a stunning go kart track open to the public. The busier tourist areas of the south coast and the town of Portimao with shopping malls, night life, sardine restaurants, sandy beaches and marina is just 25 minutes away. Take a boat trip from Portimao or Lagos to watch the dolphins in their natural habitat.

Shopping in Nearby PortimaoPortimao has now surpassed Faro to become the shopping mecca of the Algarve and is just 20 minutes drive from Monchique. Boasting the largest shopping mall on the Algarve, Aqua Portimao is situated just 20 minutes drive from Monchique, on three floors with 117 shops, restaurants and a hypermarket, again parking is free. “Stunning Location. Views to the coast are amazing and especially at night with all the twinkling lights along the south coast. The villa is also exceptional, everything and more, the photos don't do it justice. The place is truly amazing. Contact with the owner was faultless and he gave tons of information on what to do and where to go, eat etc. We are going to make this an annual holiday as we have discovered the perfect place.”

    “Devastated!

That was how we felt on leaving this amazing villa and its views. We spent 2 weeks at Villa Vida Nova in July 2020 and we could not have been more content. The villa has been decorated to a high standard and we had everything we needed. We used the pool several times a day and it was wonderful. There is an abundance of things to look at – huge, beautiful butterflies gliding around, swallows, swifts and martins taking the odd, sneaky drink from the pool and geckos taking advantage of nightfall to snack on small bugs. The stars at night were breath taking.

A bonus was the lack of mosquitos and we were not bitten once.

The cleaner took covid safe precautions which meant that we could fully relax and we did!

We visited some wonderful restaurants in Monchique (our favourite was Luar da Fóia) all of which required masks when not seated and distance between tables. We also explored the west coast which has some of the most amazing cliffs and beaches.

A car was essential for us to enjoy the area. The area is hilly but we wouldn’t have had the fantastic views without it.

The only negative is that the figs on the huge fig tree were sadly not ripe when we were there!”

    Comment from property owner :
“Thank you Gerald. We are thrilled that you had a wonderful holiday in our villa and do hope that you will return in the not too distant future.”

“We spent a week in Villa Vida Nova at the beginning of October and had an overall fantastic experience.

The first thing that you immediately notice upon entering the villa are the spectacular views from every window, balcony, pool area and really just any place. They are truly breathtaking and we enjoyed them immensely during all of our stay.

Villa Vida Nova is uniquely well-located – it's a quiet spot with just a few houses nearby, and yet it's a very short (5-10 minutes) drive to all the amenities of the Monchique town, most importantly the Intermarche. As Nigel noted, the Intermarche is indeed well-stocked – we never had to visit any other supermarket. There is a wide selection of wines, fresh meat for the grill, local cheeses, sausages, olives etc. You can also walk up the road to a couple of restaurants, and the beaches are about a 30-40 minutes drive away.

We loved the design of the villa: the rooms are spacious, with high ceilings and large windows that let in a lot of light and fresh air. There is plenty of space for a big group of people, and still we as a couple felt cozy there. All the furniture and appliances are of high quality and in great condition. There is a large variety of cutlery, dishes, glassware etc, for anything you might need.

It's the perfect place to relax and enjoy everything Portugal has to offer!”

“From booking to arrival, communication with Nigel was seamless and although we arrived slightly earlier than anticipated, we were welcomed by the maid and her son who were charming.

The villa and garden are beautiful, complemented by a pleasant view down to the coast. Ideally situated for peace, seclusion and adventures; we enjoyed a wonderful week exploring Western Portugal and also time in and around the pool. There is much to see and do in the surrounding area, an abundance of restaurants and beautiful beaches to explore. The sunrises and sunsets are not to be missed, preferably enjoyed on one of the balconies with a coffee or drink in hand. As dog owners, we welcomed the attention of the adorable black lab living next door, who was very friendly and often came to the gate to greet us. However, as Nigel rightly advises, do not encourage the local cat; he was quite persistent, even biting my husbands ankle!

Having stayed in many villas, we were impressed by the attention to detail in both the indoor and outdoor space. Our only gripe was the air con unit in the main bedroom but, having mentioned this to Nigel, it is being attended to. Overall, a fabulous week in a wonderful villa, to which I’m sure we will be returning in the very near future.”

    Comment from property owner :
“Thank you for your lovely review, Bev and I are thrilled that you had such a good time there, despite the cat encounter. Our airco technician found a huge wasps nest in the outside condenser so it is up and running again. We hope it will not be too long before you return. Again many thanks!”
